Important Steps to Teaching Reading – For Students with Reading Difficulties
Promote Self-Confidence and a Feeling of Success – 3 Easy Steps!
The first step in helping struggling readers is to ensure that they experience some form of success – to boost confidence levels. Select books that promote ‘chiming in’ or books that have predictable text. Books with patterns enable the child to predict text. Provide lots of exposure to the same book, the child will first memorize the book and will feel successful about reading the book. The next stage once the book has been memorized: put the words from the book on blank cards and ask the child to order them and to pick out the known words. Next the child will begin to identify the specific words. Always make sure the child has a great deal of exposure to the same book until he/she’s reached a level of success that suggests moving on. (Usually indicated by the child being able to read the isolated words on cards).
Use the word cards to ask ‘what other words sound like ______’this too is a good learning experience. Always select books that the child will attain success with, moving on to more difficult text as he/she progresses.
Book Recommendations:
Eric Carle – Most of Eric Carle’s books are great – I particularly like ‘Have You Seen My Cat’
Shirley Neitzel’s – The Jacket I Wear in the Snow
Maurice Sendak – Chicken Soup with Rice
Pat Hutchins – The Doorbell Rang
Martin, Bill, Jr. -Brown Bear, Brown Bear and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Numeroff, Laura – If You Give a Moose a Muffin
When shopping for early reading books – be sure to select from the ‘emergent reader’ section.
